INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NEW
AND REPRINTED PROVERB COLLECTIONS
The publication of proverb collections
continues to be quite impressive throughout the world. There
is a definite paremiographical interest in both new and
reprinted collections. Obviously some of the major
collections are true scholarly masterpieces, but there are
also smaller popular collections which do not make claim to
any serious research goals. Altogether these books range
from regional to national and on to international compendia.
The most notable publication during this past year is
without doubt Gyula Paczolay's European Proverbs in 55
Languages with Equivalents in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit,
Chinese and Japanese (Veszprém, Hungary:
Veszpréemi Nyomda Rt., 1997). Paremiographers
everywhere owe great thanks to this untiring paremiographer
for making this invaluable comparative proverb collection
available.
As has always been the case, I owe
thanks to some friends and colleagues for sending me
collections and bibliographical information during the year.
While I cannot mention everybody here, let me name at least
the following individuals: Alan Dundes (Berkeley), Gyula
Paczolay (Veszprém), Emmanuel Strauss (Merstham,
Surrey), Helmut Walther (Wiesbaden), and Fionnuala Williams
(Belfast).
Let me close these short prefatory
comments by asking paremiographers to inform me about their
new or reprinted proverb collections. Do feel free to supply
me with about 300 flyers of such books so that I can include
them free of charge in my annual mailing of Proverbium. This is a service that I gladly provide
to colleagues working in the field of paremiography. Such
advertisements of proverb collections will inform people of
the newest paremiographical publications, and they might
result in a few additional sales to private scholars and
libraries as well.
