INTERNATIONAL PROVERB SCHOLARSHIP: AN UPDATED
BIBLIOGRAPHY
This past year 327 paremiological publications came to my
attention, and it is with much excitement that I present
this updated bibliography here. Let me also mention that
each and every item of this list is part of my international
proverb archive here in Burlington, Vermont. It is not
always easy to obtain these materials, and I thank all of
those scholars and friends who mailed me their new
publications during the year. I would like to thank
especially Peter Grzybek (Graz), Timothy C. Nelson (Davos),
Gyula Paczolay (Veszprém), Helmut Walther
(Wiesbaden), and Fionnuala (Belfast). Please do continue
sending me your new publications so that I can include them
in these annual bibliographies. In the case of new books,
feel free to send me about 300 flyers which I will include
without charge in the next international mailing of Proverbium.
This last year of the century has once again yielded an
impressive volume of paremiological publications ranging
from articles and monographs to very useful essay volumes.
The Spanish yearbook Paremia under the dedicated
editorship of Julia Sevilla Muñoz (Madrid) has also
become an invaluable publication for paremiologists from
around the world. There is no space here to comment on
individual books, but let me at least mention the massive
and truly impressive work by Joachim Lengert, Romanische
Phraseologie und Parömiologie: Eine teilkommentierte
Bibliographie. (Von den Anfängen bis 1997). 2 vols.
(Tübingen: Gunter Narr, 1999) with its 2132 pages and
17433 entries! This is a remarkable accomplishment, and
paremiologists interested in Romance languages will find
this bibliography to be an indispensable research tool.
Speaking of bibliographies, let me mention in closing
that it is my plan to put together a fourth volume of my International Proverb Scholarship: An Annotated
Bibliography (New York: Garland publishing 1982, 1990,
and 1993) during this first year of the new millennium. The
bibliography will contain about 3000 paremiological
publications that have appeared during the last decade of
the twentieth century. The volume will include, of course,
extensive name and subject indexes. The annual
bibliographies which I have put together for Proverbium will be combined in this volume and
together with the annotations and indexes will be of much
greater use to paremiologists throughout the world.
