Collections of proverbs, proverbial expressions, idioms,
and slurs continue to appear around the world. The 87 titles
of this annual bibliography show that scholarly as well as
popular collections abound in most languages. It must,
however, be stated that many collections are indeed intended
primarily for the general reader. Most of them lack
scholarly annotations by skilled paremiographers and
lexicographers. But there are numerous exceptions, as can be
seen from titles that contain several hundred pages. There
are also once again a number of bilingual collections of
phrases and idioms that are of much use for translators. Of
particular value to paremiographers are quite naturally
those collections that are based on historical and/or
comparative materials. Much still needs to be done in this
area, and it behooves scholars from such varied fields as
paremiography, lexicography, and cultural history to work
together on major proverb collections of this type. A most
impressive example of this type of work is the massive Wörterbuch der Redensarten zu der von Karl Kraus
1899 bis 1936 herausgegebenen Zeitschrift "Die Fackel", ed. Werner Welzig (Wien: Verlag der Österreichischen
Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1999) with its 1055 pages.
As has always been the case with these annual
bibliographies, I wish to thank those colleagues and friends
who have mailed their published collections to me. Much
thanks is also due in particular Timothy C. Nelson (Davos),
Gyula Paczolay (Veszprém), Helmut Walther (Wiesbaden)
and Fionnuala Williams (Belfast) for supplying me with
invaluable bibliographical information. But let me ask once
again that paremiographers send me their publications so
that I can register them properly in these updated
bibliographies and add them to my ever-growing international
proverb archive. If you cannot provide your collection or
dictionary as donations, I will be more than happy to
purchase them. Also please remember that we can mail out
about 300 flyers advertising any new paremiographical
publication when we send the annual Proverbium volume
to scholars throughout the world. This service is free of
charge and will do much to let people know about the newest
proverb collections.
