INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NEW AND
REPRINTED PROVERB COLLECTIONS, 1997
For Gyula Paczolay
This year's bibliography of new and reprinted proverb
collections is especially comprehensive due to the much
appreciated help that I have received once again from my
Hungarian friend Gyula Paczolay (Veszprém). He
supplied me with numerous Chinese, Hungarian, Indian, and
Japanese references. He had attended a major folklore
conference in India, and together we participated at an
international proverb forum in Japan. I also travelled to an
international proverb congress that took place in Spain, and
all of this activity gave us the opportunity to purchase or
look at new and reprinted proverb collections. I wish to
acknowledge the help that I have received from Gyula
Paczolay during the past dozen years by dedicating this
bibliography to him.
The 164 entries in this list indicate that there is much
paremiographical activity throughout the world. As usual,
the collections range from small popular books with
wonderful illustrations to major scholarly collections of
over one thousand pages. While most of them deal with
proverbs of one national or regional language, there are
also several important comparative collections that have
appeared during the last year. I want to draw special
attention to the significant Chinese, Indian, and Japanese
collections included in this bibliography. The meetings in
India and Japan will doubtlessly help paremiographers
everywhere to gain much more knowledge about the rich Asian
proverb tradition.
It has been my personal pleasure to obtain most of the
collections listed here for my international proverb
archive. A few of them are reviewed in this issue of Proverbium, but obviously we are not in a position to
review all of them. Let me close, however, by asking
paremiographers to inform me about their new or reprinted
proverb collections. If at all possible, please mail copies
to me or let me know how I can purchase a copy. Also feel
free to supply me with about 300 flyers of such books which
I will include free of charge in my annual mailing of Proverbium. It behooves all of us to advertise these
proverb collections as widely as possible so that scholars
and libraries can make use of the fruits of our untiring
labors.
