WOLFGANG MIEDER
INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NEW AND
REPRINTED PROVERB COLLECTIONS, 1994*
The first ten volumes of Proverbium (1984-1993) have registered a total of 725 new and reprinted proverb
collections from around the world. While not all of them are
major scholarly achievements, this impressive number is
nevertheless a clear indication of the energetic
paremiographical work that is going on. Some of the
illustrated collections are mere "fun" books for tourists or
to be given as gifts, but they too play a role in
disseminating proverbs from one culture and language to
another. Of much greater importance are, of course, such
collections which follow rigid paremiographical and
lexicographical principles. Among the list of 96 titles
assembled here this time, there are certainly several
extremely important collections, as for example Giuseppe Di
Stefano's Dictionnaire des locutions en moyen
français (1991), Mark Kirchner's, Sprichwörter der Kasachen (1993), Matti Kuusi and Outi Lauhakangas' Maailman sananlaskuviisaus (1993),
and P.R. Wilkinson's Thesaurus of Traditional
English Metaphors (1992).
As has always been the case, I
have once again benefitted from the bibliographical help by
such kind colleagues and friends as Simon J. Bronner
(Middletown, Pennsylvania), Gyula Paczolay
(Veszprém), Theodore Papadopoullos (Athens),
Stanislaw Predota (Wroclaw), and Helmut Walther (Wiesbaden).
Others have mailed me their respective proverb collections,
and I urge other paremiographers to send me their published
collections or at least information concerning them. With
this assistance it will be possible for me to make these
annual bibliographies even more inclusive. Regional,
national, and international paremiographers need solid
proverb collections, and this yearly bibliography is an
effective way of informing everybody of the newest
paremiographical publications. The result will be even
better comparative and historical proverb dictionaries, and
obviously such collections will enhance the interpretive
work of paremiologists as well. No scholar can afford to
work in a vacuum, and the expressed purpose of Proverbium is to continue to serve
proverb scholars everywhere as an up-to-date
publication.
