INTERNATIONAL PROVERB SCHOLARSHIP: AN UPDATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

The past year has once again been rich in truly superb paremiological publications throughout the world. My annual bibliography registers 388 entries in numerous languages, and the content of these notes, articles, bibliographies, dissertations, and books is very diverse indeed. Obviously many deal with historical, linguistic, cultural, anthropological, literary, and semiotic issues, but there are also numerous publications looking at proverbs from a comparative and contrastive point of view. The interest in the use of proverbs in the mass media continues to be high, and scholars also still look at the problem of the translatability of proverbs. A mere glance at the present bibliography will bring to light the breadth and depth of modern paremiology, a field of study which quite literally has no limits.

Many friends and colleagues have sent me their new publications during this past year. Let me thank you all for this kind help, and let me encourage everyone to supply me with copies of recently published works. This will enable me to make these annual bibliographies as complete as humanly possible. The following scholars have been especially helpful during this year, and I thank them for their invaluable assistance: Heinrich L. It should be noted from this bibliography that the scholarly fields of phraseology and paremiology have a very fruitful interrelationship. While phraseologists look at broader issues, they quite often also deal specifically with proverbial matters. And while paremiologists frequently confine themselves only to proverbs, they enter phraseological territory when dealing with proverbial expressions, proverbial comparisons, etc. In any case, scholars of both fields must pay attention to the rich publications in both areas. This is obvious from numerous essay volumes included in this bibliography whose contents clearly cover both phraseology and paremiology.
